CHAPTER 26
DANTE
âSir?â Tanya whispers from behind me, her heels clicking on the ground as she tries to keep up with my quick pace. âSir? Please, the media is demanding answers. They want to know that youâre okay, and what the future of the Fae Council looks like,â she says breathlessly as I stalk through the halls of my home.
I grit my teeth, ignoring my rambling secretary in hopes she will get the hint. The pain in my chest flares as I go, and I have to give my son props where it's due. He handled my attack much better than I had anticipated. The only problem is that he wasn't supposed to gain his freedom, not until Mammon had him under his command, while I kept Kathrynâs daughter. Unfortunately, I seriously underestimated my sonâs will to protect his mate, and now I have six extremely angry Royal Demons to deal with.
âSir?â Tanya says again, and I start to lose my temper. âDante! They need to know. Iâm getting hounded by the press and donât know what to do!â she yells, and I whip around, grabbing her around her throat and squeezing.
âRemember your place,â I hiss, my magic perking up at the thought of reaping the womanâs soul. Iâve kept Tanya around this long because she seemed to have good survival instincts and knows when to shut up. Sheâs also very good at turning a blind eye to the various guests I bring into my home and office. But sheâs starting to wear on my nerves and my magic presses to the surface, wanting to taste her death.
The woman gasps and reaches up, clawing with her perfectly painted fingernails at the hand I have wrapped around her throat. âThis is your job! Figure it out,â I demand before shoving her back and making her fall to the ground with a cry. âYou are quickly outliving your usefulness,â I mutter, straightening my posture before turning on my heel and heading back to my study.
âThe Captain of the SSAD has requested for you to come in and give your account of that night.â Tanyaâs raspy voice follows me, and I pause, letting the anger I feel filter through my body before locking it up. I straighten my shoulders and keep walking, ignoring the thread of panic that tries to creep in. There is a rustle behind me, and Tanyaâs heels click on the floor, following me as I throw open the doors to my study. A tall shadowy figure greets me; the small lamp on my desk only casts enough light to see the outline of Noxâs eight-foot-tall Demon body.
âYou are on a sinking ship, Dante! And Iâm not going down with you,â Tanya growls out behind me, then pulls up short when she sees the Demon lurking in the shadows.
âAgreed,â I grind out, letting my scythe form in my hands before arcing it, reaping her soul as the blade cuts through the delicate skin of her neck. Her startled gasp turns into
